He kept a studio on West Street, and photographed politicians, actors, athletes and other public figures such as John Philip Sousa, Sarah Winnemucca, Edmund Breese, and the Boston Americans. Text on matte reads: "E. Chickering & Co., 21 West St., BOSTON" Text on folder front reads: "E. Chickering Co. 006 1858c Cashman family portrait
006 1858c Cashman family portrait
This is a tintype copy of an older ambrotype taken circa 1858. It is believed to be an image of James Cashman, his wife, Catherine Long, and their first seven children. This image was sent to Maureen Taylor, a nationally-known photo historian, for analysis and she said that it looks like it was taken in the 1858-1860 time frame because of the very wide collars that everyone is wearing and the style of the clothing of the women and children. In 1858, James Cashman and Catherine Long had seven children:  Joanna, Julia, John, Dennis, Catherine, James Timothy and Mary Priscilla. Three more children would be born later: William in 1859, Ellen in 1862, and Luke J. in 1866.
From left to right, the children in the photo would be...John Cashman (approx. 9 yrs old), Johanna Cashman (approx. 13 yrs old), James Timothy Cashman (approx. 2 yrs old), baby, Mary Priscilla Cashman (approx. 8 mos old), Dennis J. Cashman (approx. 7 yrs old), Catherine Cashman (approx. 4 yrs old), and Julia Cashman (approx. 11 yrs old). In the center of the photo there are three adults. The imposing man with the suit and tie could only be James Cashman. The woman to the right of center must be his wife Catherine Long. Due to the striking resemblance of the two adult women, Maureen Taylor was of the opinion that they were closely related, probably mother and daughter, as they have the same face shape, eyes, nose and mouth.

It was common during this time period to pose a family matriarch in the center of the photo, a place of honor. It is possible that Catherine’s mother, Julia Long, may have come for a visit and gone back to Ireland at a later date. According to Maureen, this was not unheard of in the mid-1850s, but definitely a big enough deal that you might want to have a photo taken to commemorate the occasion.
It is believed that the three adults in the center of the photo are James Cashman - family patriarch (age 38), Julia McNamara Long (Catherine's visiting mother), Catherine Long Cashman (age 34).

006 1937 Cloghroe Church and Bridge Co Cork Ireland
The small gray building in the cetner of this  photograph is the place where James and Catherine Cashman took their children, Johanna, Julia and John, to be baptized by Rev. John Cahill in 1845, 1847 and 1849, respectively. The Cloghroe Church was located in the Parish of Inniscarra in the Diocese of Cloyne. A new church building was built in 1860-61 and this old building was converted to the Cloghroe Boys & Girls National School. This photo, taken in 1937 while it was still a school, shows what the area looked like 87 years after James and Catherine lived there. The house in the background is the school principal's residence. 006 2011 House at 232 Webster Street, Assinippi
This house was built in 1850, and is adjacent to the 220 Webster Street location in Hanover Massachusetts where the James Cashman farm was located.  Clare Noonan lives on property behind this house, #232 Webster Street, and hopes to find out that she is living on old James Cashman farm property!  When I zoomed in on the photo, I noticed that the numbers beside the front door read "232". I checked with the Hanover Town Assessors Office and their website confirms that this house is actually at "232 Webster Street." I also learned from the Assessors Office that the house is a 1 1/2 story, 8-room Cape, built in 1850 and purchased in 2000 by Michelle Mahoney & Andrew Johnson, the owners of record.  After much research, I have learned that James Cashman DID NOT own this property at 232 Webster Street, Assinippi. He DID own the properties which abutted this one to the east and south. During the years that James lived in Hanover, this property was owned by the Barry, Clapp, and Goodrich families.

This is a present day photograph of the building where James and Catherine Cashman took their children, Johanna, Julia and John, to be baptized by Rev. John Cahill in 1845, 1847 and 1849, respectively. The Cloghroe Church was located in the Parish of Inniscarra in the Diocese of Cloyne. A new church building was built in 1860-61 and this old building was converted to a school.  This section of the building was the boys junior and senior classes (up to ages about 13 or so). In 2012, this building exists as the Cloghroe Commercial Centre, a small industrial unit. The interior walls are the original stone work but the outer one hase been covered with plaster.  [Photo credit: Brian Gabriel, Chairmain, Blarney and District Historical Society]

The section on the right (with the 'Centre' sign) was the girls' school. Internally, both buildings were divided width-ways by a glass and timber partition thereby creating two rooms in each building. This was to seperate the junior and senior classes. The center section (with the 'Commercial' sign) was an empty space which was built over in later years. The high building in the background was the headmaster's house. Some years later, a new school was built and this building became a furniture factory. In 2012, this building exists as the Cloghroe Commercial Centre, a small industrial unit. This dwelling, located at 263 Webster Street in Hanover, MA, was known as the “Connell House.” It was built in 1860 so it would have been present in the years that James Cashman owned the land and is most likely one of James’ original tenant dwellings. The 1875 Hanover Valuation of Estates valued this dwelling at $300. The 1879 map of Hanover depicts a dwelling on this site with the notation “J. Cashman.” When James Cashman died, this parcel passed to his heirs who sold it to Jedediah Dwelley and Samuel Church, both of Hanover, for $290 in 1892. It is parcel 04-005 on the Hanover Assessor’s map. [Photo credit: Donna Goldstein]

Even the poorest homes in rural Ireland had aesthetic value for those who lived in them. This painting from 1875 shows how people too poor to afford a dresser might stand their few plates on edge on wall shelves for decorative effect. If Denis was not a "strong farmer" perhaps the interior of his home looked more like this.  [Photo credit: "Rural Ireland - The Inside Story," edited by Vera Kreilkamp, published by the Boston College McMullen Museum of Art, 2012, page ]

This painting from 1880 depicts a "strong farmer" sitting on a bench outside his landlord's office waiting to pay the rent. While there are varying definitions, one source says that a "strong farmer" was one who leased 30 acres or more. In that case, even if Denis and John Cashman were co-tenants, Denis would probably have been considered a "strong farmer." - Sarah Evans [Photo credit: "Rural Ireland - The Inside Story," edited by Vera Kreilkamp, published by the Boston College McMullen Museum of Art, 2012, page 154]

From "Cuba and It's Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo, Volume 1" by Ned Sublette:  "These social clubs also had picniclike festivities , complete with the music of their homeland as well as habaneras and danzones, at the sumptuous new gardens opened by the La Tropical brewery. Cerveza Tropical was Cuba's first domestic brand of beer, brewed since 1891. The vast Jardines de la Tropical complex on the Rio Almendares, created in imitation of the grand beer gardens of Germany, opened in 1904. If the numerous overhanging trees made La Tropical a little dank in the winter months, in the sweltering tropical summer it was the coolest spot around. La Tropical's competitor, Cerveza Polar, opened up their own gardens. By the 1920s, these festivities attracted up to fifiteen thousand people." From the personal photo collection of Jay Cashman.

014 1948c Madeline Solimando crocheted doily
014 1948c Madeline Solimando crocheted doily
Madeline Solimando (Mommie Lee) created this piece between 1948 and 1950. Her mother, Conchetta Verrochi, first taught her to crochet in 1910 when Mommie Lee was a young child, around ten years old, living on Ceylon Street in Dorchester. Crocheting, along with afghan making, piano playing, and listening to the phonograph were popular forms of entertainment in an era where TV had not yet been invented. Most nights, after the day's work, Madeline would sit in the kitchen, the family's gathering spot and social center, near the coal stove with her mother and crochet. "My mother and I were two pals," she recalled. "Rose was always busy with books, and I was always with my mother." Mommie Lee picked up her childhood craft again in 1948, after moving to 331 Adams Street in Milton. There, Michael's aunt, Theresa Bello, taught her more complex crochet patterns and shapes. In these days she was prolific. "I never sat down and did nothing. Never," she recounted. Special crochet thread was purchased by the case, "wherever I could get a bargain." Mommie Lee would sit in the TV room in her armchair "for hours after I did my work," and crochet or knit afghans while Daddy Solimando watched sports on TV. Many of these pieces have been preserved. When Mommie Lee lost her sight, she had to stop her favorite pastimes of crocheting and afghan making. Even though she can no longer create these lovely works, many still remain to be enjoyed by generations of family members to come. [Source credit: Concetta Solimando Kelley]

017 1920s James E Cashman home 109 Summit Street
This building, located at 109 Summit Street Burlington, VT, was the home of James E. Cashman and family from about 1923 to 1935. It is now part of the campus of Champlain College. The original owner, Oliver O. Presbry, who built the house in 1895, lived there until 1921. The house was then occupied by various families, most notably James Cashman, Burlington City Engineer. In the late 1930's the house was converted to apartments. Champlain College purchased the house in 1994, converted it to student housing and named it Schillhammer Hall. 017 1920s Marion Cashman portrait
This is believed to be a high school or college graduation portrait of Marion Cashman. Studio stamp on matte reads: Clark, Burlington, VT. Handwriting on back of print reads, "Eleanor Cashman Dorn (Frank Dorn)," but it is believed that the writer got the first name of this woman wrong. Frank Dorn was the husband of Marion Cashman NOT Eleanor Cashman. [Photo credit: collection of Jean Cashman (1926-2005) courtesy of Brian Cashman]

The fact that all of James E. Cashman's children are in this photo and none of William J. Cashman's children are represented suggests that this photo was taken in Burlington, VT, perhaps on a special occasion like the graduation of Grace Louise from high school or Eleanor's graduation from college. This building, located at 87 College Street, Burlington, VT, was the home of James E. Cashman and family from at least 1910 to 1920. It is immediately adjacent to James' office at 77 College Street. (The sliver of building you can see on the right side of the house is James' office.)    This house was listed on the Burlington Historic Sites and Structures Survey (HSSS) from 1978. It was built around 1850, possibly for James Mitchell whose family lived there until the turn of the century. Mitchell, who worked as a tailor, was also an officer in the Green Mountain Lodge of Odd Fellows.     The house is a brick veneer oriented with a pediment and a peak fanlight facing the street. It has a stone foundation and slate roof. Its footprint remains consistent from the Presdee and Edwards map to present day. A Google street view from September 2008 shows the house as present and in much the same condition.    [Photo credit: http://www.uvm.edu/~hp206/2001-1853/elothrop/87c.html (1978)]

019 1895 Mary Cashman as she was in school
"Mary Cashman as she was in school" This is the caption that accompanied this photo in the biography of Daniel Bartholomew Reardon that was written by his son, Paul Cashman Reardon. If we assume that the date printed on the border of this cabinet card "1895" is the year that the photo was taken, then Mary Cashman was 18 years old when this photo was snapped. Perhaps this photo was taken to mark her graduation from Quincy High School in June of 1895.  This cabinet card was produced by the studios of Charles W. Hearn, 392 Boylston Street, Boston, and Old Orchard, Maine. [Photo credit: collection of Martha Reardon Bewick]

019 1901c Cashman family at Cedar Bluff
019 1901c Cashman family at Cedar Bluff
In June of 1901, Hannah M. Cashman purchased a piece of property on Hough's Neck in Quincy. This photograph may have been taken that first summer to commemerate the new acquisition. At the turn of the century, Hough's Neck was one of the premiere resorts in the United States. Old family photographs such as this one suggest that 20 Bay View Avenue, or "Cedar Bluff" as it was called, was a popular summer gathering place for the wife, children and grandchildren of John Cashman from 1901 to 1919. The structure was built in 1892 and was set high on a rise overlooking Quincy Bay. Adjacent to the house was a steep slope where the family played games and posed for pictures. A flight of steep wooden stairs led from the house to the beach. The original house from 1892 is still in existence, although it has been recently renovated. Seated on the lawn, from L to R: William J. Cashman, Hannah Cashman, Helen Cashman, Catherine Adeline Cashman, Henry A. Cashman, unknown girl, Anna Beatrice Cashman. The caption under this photo reads, "A Cashman family gathering at their summer house on the Quincy shore, about 1905." As the sign in the upper right corner indicates, this photo was taken at "Cedar Bluff," the Cashman family's summer home at 20 Bayview Avenue in Hough's Neck, Quincy. [NOTE of Donna J. Goldstein: based on the apparent age of Henry A. Cashman, it is believed that a more accurate date for this photo would be 1901-1902] Back row, L to R: Anna Beatrice Cashman, Daniel B. Reardon, Catherine Adeline Cashman, John Cashman, Helen Cashman, Mary Agnes Cashman, unknown woman. Front row, L to R: Hannah Cashman, Henry A. Cashman. The next five females are unknown. It is believed that this impromptu family photo was taken on the occasion of the christening (or a few months after the birth) of William J. Cashman Jr., first child of William J. Cashman Sr. and Anna Zita Barry. This photo captures all of John and Hannah Cashman's children with the exception of the oldest, Adeline Cashman Dalton, who by 1905 was married and living in Sandwich on the Cape. Standing, from L to R: Mary Agnes Cashman, Helen Frances Cashman, James Eugene Cashman, John Joseph Cashman, Henry A. Cashman. Squatting, L to R: Anna Beatrice Cashman, William Joseph Cashman Sr. holding William Joseph Cashman Jr., and Anna Zita Barry. William J. Cashman Jr. was born in March of 1905. The clothing, foliage and size of the infant suggest that this photo was taken during the summer of 1905. [Photo credit: collection of Jean Cashman (1926-2005) courtesy of Brian Cashman]

019 1913 John Cashman funeral floral display
019 1913 John Cashman funeral floral display
Floral arrangements from the funeral of John Cashman displayed around his grave at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Quincy, MA, on March 29, 1913, the day of his funeral. One Quincy newspaper article described the floral display as "one of the largest and finest ever seen in this city and it necessitated four carriages to transport these remembrances to the cemetery. There were massive standing pieces from St. Francis' Court, M. C. O. F., the Quincy Electric Light and Power Company, the Bay State Dredging Company and Mr. Cashman's brother, William. The latter offering was the biggest floral piece ever seen in this city and one of the largest ever constructed. It represented a tug towing barges under a span bridge, typifying the span of life." William Cashman's floral tribute can be seen on the right hand side of this photo.  The mat bears the imprint of Nerses Studio, 1507 Hancock St., Quincy, MA. Detailed view of the house number and side entry at 107 Cross Street in West Quincy, MA. This house was built in 1890, the same year that William Cashman built his house at 117 Cross Street, two doors down. At the time of building, this lot was owned by John Cashman so John probably arranged for its construction or maybe even built it himself. In 1891, it was the residence of John's brother, Luke, and John's mother, Catherine Long Cashman. Until about 1911, this address was known as 37 Cross Street.

019 2006c 111 Cross Street house from 1940
This duplex home was built in 1940 and is not from the Cashman period. It is located at 111 and 113 Cross Street in West Quincy, MA. This structure sits on land that was purchased by John Cashman in 1882, inherited by his heirs upon his death in 1913, and sold to Mary F. Murphy Cashman in 1919. Before John bought this property, it was owned by J. Q. A. Field, John's employer. It seems plausible that John would live in a tenant dwelling on his boss' land until he had saved enough to buy his own home.

St. Louis Cathedral  "St. Louis Cathedral, in St. Louis Missouri, a magnificent Romanesque-Byzantine basilica.  In construction since 1908, the whole interior above the height of 50 feet is covered by superb mosaics.  Only the two transept half domes and neighboring “soffits” or underarches had been painted more than 50 years ago, and, badly deteriorated, needed replacing.  It was determined to accomplish this replacement with mosaics of the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit.  I had the good fortune to be the artist selected, two years ago.  In another two years my part of the project should be finished.  To complete areas of 82 feet circumference by 42 feet in height, and of 76 feet in length by 18 feet in height, and of 76 feet in length by 18 feet in width, with the largest figure 14 feet tall, will demand at least that time span.  Of 8,000 square feet, only half is already safely on its way."
