006 1844 Johanna Herlighy Exham Papers p2
Here are the papers mentioning the widow Herlighy who lived in the civil parih of Inniscarra in the town of Lisadeen. This town is also where James Cashman lived. In the next household a Widow Johanna Herlihy is listed. These Exham papers show that Johanna Herlihy is the widow of a Corneilus Herlighy. Concidences: Herlighy is the maiden name of James Cashman's mother, Johanna.Timothy Murphy is a name that appears as a baptismal Sponsor for James Cashman's child Judith aka Julia. At this point we do not know if these Cashman, Herlighy, Murphy families are related.  Another note is on 29 April 1781 a Cors Hierlihy married a Johanna Murphy Recorded Parochial Area at ST PETER & PAUL'S, CORK.  Witness were Sheehan and Mary Farrll.  There is no way of knowing if this is the Widow Herlighy married to Corneilus either.

006 1800s Example of a Bark Rigged Ship
006 1800s Example of a Bark Rigged Ship
The passenger list of James and Catherine lists their sailing vessel as the "Bark Adonis" burthen 904 tons. What is a "Bark" and what does "904 burthen" mean?     The term "Bark" refers to the configuration of the sails and rigging. Common configurations of the era included Bark (or Barque), Ship, Brig and Schooner. A "Bark" rigged vessel was a three-masted vessel with the foremast and mainmast square rigged and the mizzenmast fore-and-aft rigged. It wasn't unusual for Barks to be re-rigged as Ships or vice-versa. A "Bark" rigged vessel, could sail with fewer crew members than the same vessel rigged as a "Ship." For this reason, many "Ship" rigged vessels were converted to "Barks" and will appear as both in Shipping News items and ship's lists. "Burthen" is a measurement for the inside volume of the ship.  [Source : Norway Heritage - Hands Across the Sea ]

006 1850 Passengers embarking at Liverpool docks
006 1850 Passengers embarking at Liverpool docks
"Steerage passengers embarking an emigrant ship at Waterloo docks, Liverpool" - The text accompanying this picture in The Illustrated London News for July 6, 1850, describes immigrants boarding a ship in Great Britain:    "The scene in the Waterloo dock, at Liverpool, where all the American sailing packets are staioned, is at all times a very busy one; but, on the morning of the departure of a large ship, with a full complement of emigrants, it is peculiarly exciting and interesting. The passengers have undergone inspection, and many of them have taken up their quarters on board for twenty-four hours previously, as they are entitled to do by terms of the act of Parliament. Many of them bring, in addtion to the boxes and trunks containing their worldly wealth, considerable quantities of provisions, although it must be confessed that the scale fixed by the Government to be supplied to them by the ship is sufficiently liberal to keep in health and comfort all among them, who, in their ordinary course of life, were not accustomed to animal food.(...)"

[Envelope]:  Mrs James Cashman, West Quincy, Mass.      [Letter]: Coachford, Co Cork, Ireland  Nov. 17, 1891    Dear Madam,            I was fortunate in being able to find your baptismal certificate for it was the last year in any book I could find in this parish so under the circumstance I was glad to be of any use. As to the expense you refer to I want nothing in that way, but I wish to inform you I am repairing my Churches which are in a very bad way and I am sure you will not forget the poor old church at home where you went often to Mass. 004 1950s Robert Cashman MMA article
004 1950s Robert Cashman MMA article
"Old Cash", the original "Mr. Quincy" arrived at M.M.A in a blaze of glory. He won many friends with his quick humor and the bottle of "handy brandy" he kept in his locker. Things ran pretty smooth for the South Quincy Terror until one night around midnight he started to tear up the quarter-deck and had to be put in his place by Mr.Hirst. This didn't phase our dauntless hero in the least and he soon went on to new and bigger things. For the sake of humor, Uncle Bob organized M.M.A.'s own National Guard Unit and trained them for combat against Sid. We think it proper to mention a little bit concerning cruise time. Many was the night Old Cash could be seen partaking of a little of "this and that" with his friends south of the border. To sum this up, we would like to say that Cash is a true sailor in every meaning of the word and his seamanship ability won him the respect of the officers and his shipmates.
