      SPENCE, Robert Joyce Sr. 85, of Scituate, died on Jan 15, 2014 after a brave battle with Alzheimer's, surrounded by his family. Robert was born in Brockton, MA on April 1, 1928. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University and Harvard Business School, after which he served in the United States Air Force. He was the beloved husband to Barbara Smyth Spence for 63 years. He was the owner of Albert Culver Company in Rockland and was a director at Rockland Trust Company for 39 years. Robert was an active member of St. Mary of the Nativity and a generous benefactor of South Shore Hospital, the YMCA and many other charitable organizations. He was an avid supporter of numerous educational institutions as well. Robert is survived by his six children and their spouses: Robert J. and Maura Spence of Scituate, William F. and Susan Spence of Norwell, Richard H. and Jeanne Spence of Scituate, Carole S. and Michael Mullen of Marshfield, Barbara S. and Peter Roberts of Scituate and Susan S. and Robert Brosnan of Norwell; and his brothers John F. and the late Betty Cameron Spence of Duxbury and William and Wilma Spence of Hingham. Cherished grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 1 great- grandson. "Bob was lovingly cared for by Pam Leeping and her associates." Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, SCITUATE on Monday January 20 from 2 to 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday January 21 at 10:00 am in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert may be made to Hospice of the South Shore, 30 Reservoir Park Drive, Rockland, MA 02370.
