    • When Henry was at the University of Vermont he was a Private in the S.A.T.C, the Student Army Training Corps. As America entered World War I, the U.S. War Department (a precursor to the Defense Department) inaugurated the Student Army Training Corps (SATC), a program designed to use existing colleges and universities as training facilities for new military personnel. Instructors were hired under a temporary contract, with the universities and colleges subsequently reimbursed by the government for expenses. Well over a hundred institutions of higher education, including the University of Vermont, took part training young men to become soldiers in a collegiate atmosphere. The SATC was the World War I incarnation of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) that continues to flourish on American college and university campuses in the twenty-first century.
