George D. Doherty, Jr. 86, Noblesville, died August 4,;2006 at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. George was born January 6, 1920 in Jacksonville, Illinois to George and Ethel (Sweeney) Doherty, Sr. His first wife, Helen Knoezer Doherty, whom he married on December 9, 1942, predeceased him after 32 years of marriage. He subsequently married Martha Mae Van Meter in Anderson on December 12, 1975 to whom he was married 30 years. George attended the University of Chicago before serving in the U. S. Army 7th Division Signal Corps during WW II. Serving under General Douglas MacArthur in the crucial October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf (Philippines) he sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, was awarded the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1945. Following military service George attended Chicago's University of Loyola completing his undergraduate degree - majoring in Political Science and specializing in Constitutional Law. This lifelong interest culminated in a 42-article series published in the Anderson Herald between October 1986 and July 1987. Subsequent to this the Indiana State Bar Association awarded George the prestigious Liberty Bell Award in 1988 recognizing his "outstanding contributions in the area of promoting better understanding and respect for the law and the court system." During his lifetime George assembled an outstanding 500 volume library of books on history, law, and the American Constitution most of which was donated to Anderson University. A 41-year Rotarian and politically active (and proud) Democrat in Anderson, George helped found the Fishers Rotary Club in 1992, served a 14-month appointment as president and was a member of the Noblesville Mid-day Rotary Club. The Fishers Rotary Club gave him the Award of the Year for outstanding dedication and service. George also served in various appointed political positions including Chairman of the Anderson Zoning Appeals Board. In addition George worked in the early 60s Civil Defense effort, served as Chairman of the Committee to draft the Historical Preservation Ordinance of the City of Anderson and was a member of the Anderson Chamber of Commerce. One of his proudest contributions to his community was being a founder of the Madison County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) where he felt privileged to work with local law enforcement, as well as the courts and prosecutor. In September 1995 WFYI Television's "Across Indiana" featured George concentrating on sketches and letters he retained from his WWII service. George's working life spanned 65 years during which he worked as a Veterans' Administration representative during which he spent six years as amicus curiae to the Cook County Court for the disposition of veterans' psychiatrist disorders. He was also a field investigator for the US Department of Labor. He worked for many years in the management training and safety divisions of Continental Can and Ford Motor Co. Striking out on his own in the late 60s he opened his own insurance and real estate agency in Anderson. His final career was in medical insurance sales and business brokering. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Cicero. He served honorably in various lay capacities in all the Catholic Churches he attended during his lifetime. George was preceded in death by his parents George and Ethel Doherty Sr., and his brother Scott Doherty. George is survived by his wife, Martha (Van Meter) Doherty of Noblesville; three daughters, Mary Kime of Indianapolis, Madeline Doherty of New York, and Charlene Love of Indianapolis; and son, Mark Doherty of McLean, Virginia; step-son, David Dickey of Fishers; two step-daughters, Paula Shellbert of Austin, Texas, and Stephanie Klumb of Noblesville; sister, Jane Doherty of Colorado; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and ten step-great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. Friends and family may visit Tuesday, August 8 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, 1115 Pearl Street, Anderson, from 11:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 12 noon. At his request, he is being cremated and his ashes will be inurned in a private ceremony with military honors in Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson.
