  • Notes  Married:
    • CEREMONY:

In 1891, the average age for a first marriage was 26 for men and 22 for women. At 31 and 30, respectively, William Cashman and Mary Frances Murphy were probably considered "mature" when they visited the Scituate Clerk's Office on January 26, 1891, to file their intention to marry. It was the first marriage for both parties.

Two days after they declared their intention, William, a quarryman from West Quincy, and Mary, a native of Scituate, were married in the Church of the Nativity on Meeting House Lane in Scituate (a building that is no longer standing). Since much of the money for building came from the mossing industry, this church was sometimes called the "Church of the Mossers." Built in 1872, this wooden structure, located in what is now the Old Saint Mary Cemetery, was a "Stick Style/Gothic Revival church with an offset tower." At the time of William and Mary's nuptials, Scituate was still just a mission church and not a parish in its own right, so their marriage was recorded in the parish records of Saint Anthony of Padua church in Cohasset.

The ceremony took place at nine o'clock in the morning and was presided over by Rev. J. P. Egan. Acting as best man was William's youngest brother, Luke J. Cashman, and serving as maid of honor was Mary's younger sister, Sarah E. Murphy. A reception was held immediately after the ceremony at the residence of the bride's parents, Peter and Bridget Murphy, on the corner of Willow (a/k/a Beaver Dam Road) and Front Streets in Scituate Harbor.

      CONFLICTS:

      - William's Forester insurance application reports marriage date as 25 Jan 1891.
      - Marriage Intention registered with town of Scituate was filed on 26 Jan 1891. It does not say when the marriage will occur.
      - The Quincy Daily Ledger article suggests marriage ocurred on 28 Jan 1891.
      - Their wedding invitation says that ceremony was planned for 28 Jan 1891.

      ANALYSIS & CONCLUSION:

The date of 28 Jan 1891 was selected because the invitation is convincing evidence and the newspaper article backs it up. [6, 7]
