| 017 1918 James E Cashman buys steamer BFP detail The Burlington Free Press - Boat Line Discontinued - No More Service Between Vergennes and Wesport - The Victor, the double-decked screw steamer which for years has plied between Vergennes and Wesport on the Vergennes-Wesport line, will make that trip no more and with its departure the service between those two places is no more. J.E. Cashman has bought the boat and this summer will use it on the breakwater work, which will be begun soon. The Victor was for years operated under the captaincy of Captain Lewis Daniels and with his death his son, Captain M.H. Daniels, took command. The boat is 75 feet in length and can carry quite a large number of passengers besides freight. Of late the line has not been over prosperous. The boat has been used to some extent in towing barges up Otter creek, but even this business has been on the decline and the management of the boat was willing to sell this spring. Mr. Cashman has a large contract to rip-rap the breakwater. Part of this work was accomplished last year, but it will take a long time to complete the job and the boat will be needed. Thousands of tons of stone will be placed against the sides of the crib of the breakwater to prevent the sides from being forced out. These sides were beginning to show signs of the wear of the ice and water and that is the reason the rip-rapping was ordered by the government. The stone which was used last year was brought in by train from Barre and loaded on barges which took it out to the breakwater. The stone is laid under the supervision of a diver who sees that the big blocks are properly placed.
